MSI K7T Pro 2-A Review
There are some special features that improve the appeal of the K7T Pro 2-A. First is the AGP retention clip. It is a plastic clip that is anchored on the AGP slot. It clips over the end of your AGP video card, to keep it securely seated, preventing errors from improperly seated video cards. Another impressive feature is the Diagnostic LED system. If there are ever any system problems during boot up, a set of four red/green LEDs will display a code for the error that halted the system. It helps immensely when troubleshooting a system error.
The K7T Pro 2-A is the most stable
motherboard I have ever used. I
have not had any system lockups because of this board at default settings.
In my attempts to clock my Athlon as high it would go, I did lock up when
I had the FSB above 110 MHz. Even
when I would run into a situation like this, it was very easy to clear the BIOS
with the clearing jumper on the board. This
would set everything back to default. There have been reported problems with this board with
multiplier overclocking. Sometimes
when the computer posts at non-default speeds, the multiplier settings will be
incorrect, and need to be reset. There
are however fixes to these problems. I
have been successfully overclocking an Athlon 850 to 1000 without problems.
It has been reported that memory performance is about 5% slower on the
K7T Pro 2-A compared to other KT133 based boards like the Asus A7V, and the Abit
KT7. Here are SiSoft Sandra 2001 CPU and memory test scores. This tested system included an MSI K7T Pro 2-A, Athlon Thunderbird 850 @ 1010 (101*10), 256 MB PC133
