Configuration

Configuring the Linksys EtherFast 4-Port Cable/DSL Router was simple, make sure you have the below mentioned requirements at hand before you start. Configuration is done through your web browser and requires the following information from your ISP.

Fixed Internet IP Address
Computer Name and Workgroup Name
Subnet Mask
Default Gateway
Primary DNS IP address

You open your browser and enter the address to http://192.168.1.1.

You will be prompted with an “Enter Network Password” pop up box. You leave the User Name empty and enter the default password, which is “admin”.

Then you should see a “SETUP” page from Linksys. For the most part this is the only page you will need, next to the change password page, which would not be a bad idea.

In the “setup” page the “Router name” is the name of the computer, in my part as I am on the @Home network it was my cr22222-a  number, then the “Domain Name” in my case was @Home. Nothing else on the page I changed. Some people may have a problem and have to “Specify a IP Address”.

I then clicked on the “Password Tab” and changed the default password to my own preference.

One option I found interesting and to some it may be dangerous was in the “Advanced” tab. I found a DMZ (Demilitarized Zone) Host tab. What this does is that it takes the specified host off the firewall and out there with no protection. Now for most of us we know that a little protection would never hurt a man. But this is a good option to have available. Certain software / games will not work under a firewall and let me tell you the Linksys EtherFast 4-Port Cable/DSL Router comes with a superb firewall which gets to my next section. (Note: I disabled the DMZ)
