Using the Pulse 424 with an Athlon 600MHz and with Sound Blaster live value. I tested it with Quake 3. I was pleased with the sound the Pulse 424 produced when I was railing Merc, there was clarity and lots of bass. I tested these speakers with one type of music from an original CD: I used Merc’s favorite lady, the hottie Jennifer Lopez. I choose her song “Let’s get Loud”. I peaked the volume up 55% before it got distorted. Now this is only one type of music, each song varies in sound and the quality of the recording so you could possibly get it to max out before it gets distorted. I used the Pulse 424 to watch the Blockbuster hit “Gladiator” on my A open 12x DVD Player. During the first fight scene the sound quality was excellent: I tested the volume at full power (which is not recommended) and there was no distortion, I was impressed. In the latter part of the movie, I decided to plug my headphones into the convenient jack in front of the speaker, worked great.
In my opinion for all of the people who are starting out in the tech world, or are looking for a good quality, clean sounding speaker, but do not want to spend a lot of money the Pulse 424 3-Piece Speaker System with Advanced Subwoofer would be a smart choice. It has a nice base sound, it is very compact, and looks good. . But the negative is when you want to turn up the bass you have to go underneath your desk and go behind your subwoofer to adjust it to way you want it (virtually all speaker systems in this price range are like this, I am just lazy to get on my hands and knee’s to adjust the bass). It’s a small thing but if you’re picky it’s not good. Another is the satellites don’t seem to be as solid construction as a few other common brand name speakers on the market. Again these are not performance negatives about the speakers. MadnessPC Rating 90%
